Adderbury Tunes
Adderbury Morris, dancing outside St. John's College, Oxford May Morning 2004
Adderbury
Morris were revived in 1974 by Tim Radford and Brian Sheppherd.
Here are some of their present day Tunes,
played by Stephen Wass on a Castagnari 2-row G/D melodeon.
Better still, they have a CD
of their dance tunes!
Sources: MBII (2nd Ed), and EDF Nov 1950. Also
information from RD, derived from three sources, viz the MSS of Sharp, Miss
Blunt and Miss Kennedy; informant in all three caes was Wm Walton. Some
discrepancies between MSS and Sharp's published versions, requiring "interpretation".
Most of the Song words obtained by FH from Walton's grandchildren

Adderbury Morris Men
will have celebrated their revival by the time you read these notes
by holding the day of dancing around the village on Saturday, April 26th, beginning at
10 o'clock in the morning outside the Old Wheatsheaf. This spot was chosen because the
last "squire" of the side, William "Binks" Walton kept the premises when it was a public
house. The last time Adderbury Morris Men danced was around 1880, but the dances were
not noted down until the 1
st World War when Miss Janet Blunt, whom older
residents may remember, secured them from Mr Walton. She in turn, notified Cecil Sharp,
a prominent folk song and dance collector, who also made an effort to collect some of the
dances from him.
The modern revival of the Morris side began last year and contains many Adderbury men and
the remainder come mainly from within a three mile radius. All the dances that you see
the Adderbury Morris Men do, twenty-two in all, come from the village and are danced by
Morris sides all over the country. So come on you Adderbury folk, turn out and watch the
side whenever they are dancing, and prove that Adderbury really is an important name in
the Morris Dance world.
