DVD: THIS IS MORRIS DANCING Concentrating on the Winster Morris team, this film examines the history and traditions of the distinctive form of morris dancing found in Derbyshire. The history of the teams is traced back to the early nineteenth century, with press cuttings, photographs and old film clips. The background to the village, and an account of the re-formation of the team in 1977 is given. There are shorter sequences showing the place of dancing in the Castleton Garland ceremony and the Tideswell Wakes torchlight procession.
The second part of the film includes complete coverage of all the dances as at Wakes Saturday 1981 though other dances have been added to the repertoire s ince and includes general footage of the Wakes day celebrations. This film was originally shot in 16mm format prior to being transferred to DVD.

DVD: THE DERBY TUP "The Derby Tup" is a Christmas Mumming play that, although it has long since died out in Derby itself, still occurs in the North Derbyshire area. It is usually performed by children in the 12-16 age range, visiting pubs in their locality in the weeks before Christmas and New Year. This film shows a version of the play from Ridgeway, Derbyshire, and was filmed in the winters of 1971 and 1972; it includes background to the locality as well as a complete version of the play, and footage of the team performing in several pubs.
"A well-produced and sympathetic description of a little-known and fascinating custom." Bill Leader
"'Derby Tup' is one of the most important films in the field of English folk custom. Genuine, scholarly, and a sensitive product of the film-makers craft, it deserves to be widely seen and appreciated. Prof S.F. Sanderson

The Roots of Welsh Border Morris ( A5 ) By Dave Jones
Like many others in the folk revival, Dave Jones interest was stimulated by the American singers and skiffle groups. Born in Brecon, he became actively involved in the British folk tradition whilst teacher training in Exeter at the beginning of the 60s and went on to found the Hereford Folk Club when he moved there in 1963. He then became involved with the EFDSS and the West Midlands Folk Federation of song clubs, and from this in 1968 and from this came the traditional Bromyard Folk Festival.

John Bartlett (A.K.A. the Bard of Victory Morris Men & Broadside Mummers) has penned a collection of new, very contemporary Mummers plays. NO !! MORRIS DANCERS & ROSE QUEENS by Johnny Haslett
This is a definitive work about the sociology of Lancashire at the end of the 19th century. The author has put together a brilliant anthology, providing fresh insights into life in late Victorian Lancashire. Here we have Morris dancing teams that travelled distances to perform in towns beyond the county limits, teams that couldnt afford to move about and therefore stayed nearer home. Morris Dancers who were influenced by teams that travelled from other towns. This book is a unique and valuable source of reference.

Horn Dance or Stag Night? by Bob Trubshaw
Apart from a few people in universities studying folklore or mythology these questions may seem strange. In this booklet Bob Trubshaw suggests that, far from being strange, folklore and mythology at least as understood by the academics are key to understanding the process by which we create our all encompassing social reality. This publication does not offer a detailed understanding of the construction of social reality. Instead it suggests some fruitful directions for further thinking. The result is both enlightening and empowering.

Explore Green Men By Mercia MacDermott
The book starts by discussing the 'paganisation' of Green Men in recent decades, then follows backwards through the Victorian Gothic Revival, Baroque, Rococco and Italianate revivals, to their heyday in the Gothic and the supposed origins in the Romanesque. As part of this discussion there is background information on the cultural changes that affected how Green Men were regarded.

Explore Folklore by Bob Trubshaw
All right then, if we must, let's explore folklore. As it turns out, this isn't actually a book stuffed with twee wizards and elves. An early chapter on folklore 'theory' sees Trubshaw doing a good job of explaining how and why 'folklore studies' came about, and giving a capsule account of Vladimir Propp's seminal taxonomy. There are interesting discussions on assumptions in the field, such as that British folklore customs must inevitably have evolved from pagan rites.

SOARING ENCHANTED 18 tracks (60 mins) by Alan Whitbread, dancer and musician for Shakespeare Morris Men, Tarka MM, Chameleonic MM and Original Welsh Borders MM. "Soaring Enchanted" is a phrase in the song "Lark in the Clear Air". While it is not Morris orientated, the tracks consist mostly of traditional English songs. Some are with a chorus backing, some have accompaniment by Alan on his English concertina. Others are solo unaccompanied songs and a couple of tracks are of haunting tunes on solo concertina, one of which is the "Abbots Bromley Horn Dance".

THREE SHEETS TO THE WIND By Black Pig Border Morris Following the immense success of its predecessor ROLL OUT A FERRET FOR JESUS the obvious has now happened. I have a personal leaning towards the mould breakers amongst us. Words like Different, Off the Wall and Fresh Air, come to mind. This is not your bog-standard Morris CD and … I like it. Nineteen tracks that include traditional folk/Morris tunes, burlesque, classical, irreverences, soundscapes and techno!!

£10.00

BEDLAM by Geoff Jerram . This is Geoff Jerram's much awaited solo CD and features 19 tracks from this long established Hampshire singer, who has been active on the local folk and Morris dancing scene since the 1960s. Geoff is a sensitive performer and he brings out the best in the songs whether singing unaccompanied, or with his subtle accompaniment on guitar and English concertina.
Although some of his songs are from an earlier period, Geoff has made a particular study of the songs collected by Gardiner in Hampshire and the Hammonds in Dorset, between 1905-1909, and includes several in his repertoire.

£12.00

LOST MORRIS
Tunes from the Cotswold Morris Traditions With a few exceptions, the 'Lost Morris' tunes on this CD can be found in Sharp's manuscripts (Vaughan Williams Memorial Library, Cecil Sharp House). They come from the counties of Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, and Oxfordshire, from locations such as Stow-on-the-Wold, Shipston-on-Stour, Lower Swell, Clifford's Mesne, Filkins, and Brill. A few are subtly different versions of well-known morris tunes such as 'Constant Billy' and 'Maid of the Mill', but many are tunes that don't turn up in other traditions.

LARK RISE TO CANDLEFORD: THE ALBION BAND was originally released in 1980 on vinyl and had a very brief short release on CD in 1991. Since then it has become one of those traditionally British gems hidden away in the closet of time. UNTIL NOW. From Keith Dewhurst, a National Theatre adaptation of Flora Thompsons classic trilogy of hamlet life in the 1880s and early 1900s, this album has become a much sort after item. Featuring a whos who of stars of the folk world including Martin Carthy, Shirley Collins, John Kirkpatrick, John Tams and Martin Simpson, to name but just a few. The books, already established as the masterpiece of a lost way of life, and an unforgettable impression of the transitional state between the old, stable, work-pleasure England and the modern world. The Music has a deliberate period flavour, with many traditional melodies and saw its first appearance at the National Theatre in 1978.
