I started dancing in 1971 with the Hartley Morris Men. Those were fantastic days! I was bagman in 1975/76 when we were at a high point. In 1980 my job took me to Tyneside and I joined Sallyport and learned to dance rapper. Later I moved to Yorkshire, joined Castleford and discovered longsword. On my return to KentI decided to form a sword team and with interested members of Hartley, set up White Star. More recently I joined North British, a team of itinerant sword dancers who dance both rapper and longsword. I continue to dance Cotswold with Hartley. My son, Nick, dances with me in Castleford, White Star and North British. Carol dances North West Morris with Kettle Bridge Clogs.
It has long been my wish to stand for election as Squire of the Ring, but I have waited until the year of my retirement as I want to be able to offer all the time the job requires.
I would promote variety by support for all the dance styles within the Ring. In particular I would encourage those clubs who dance a sword dance as a second string dance to perform it more often.
Is it time for a sword dancer as Squire? The last was Ivor Allsop in 1978/80. But I am also an enthusiastic Cotswold dancer and would work to promote participation and excellence in all that we do.
